Architecture museum Ljubljana
(Arhitekturni muzej Ljubljana)
The Museum of Architecture Ljubljana is the main Slovenian museum for architecture, which makes it a must if you are interested in the building art of the Central European region or you would simply like to broaden your horizons. Are you curious why you find Ljubljana as attractive, cultured and likeable as you do?
The museum holds a permanent exhibition about the work of the famous domestic architect Joze Plecnik, who left a visible fingerprint in the urban culture of Ljubljana. His life and work in Vienna, Prague and homeland is presented and his house in the Trnovo district is possible to be seen as well.
Beside periodical exhibitions of old and modern Slovene architecture, the museum also presents other domestic and foreign architects and hosts numerous foreign exhibitions. Despite its name, the museum assembles, stores and displays not only material from the field of architecture but runs departments and expositions of industrial design, photography and visual communications as well. It owns a library, which is housed at the Fuzine Castle too. Publications of domestic and foreign origin focus on the subjects of the museum's research and its departments mentioned above. It is open to the public and material is available for rent but with further notice only.
Two permanent exhibitions of the museum are:
- Plecnik's Exibition at Fuzine Castle;
- Architect Joze Plecnik 1872-1957.
The Biennial of Industrial Design takes place at the museum every even year with Slovene and foreign participants.
Other exhibitions are occasional, some taking place at Jakopic Gallery on Slovenska Cesta also.
Getting there
The museum is situated at the suburbs of the city within the beautiful environment of a Renaissance castle in the Fuzine quarter. As it is a bit too far to walk from the city centre, a fifteen minute bike ride is a very practical and healthy solution and thus recommended. If you are without a bike, the final stop of bus number 20 brings you there. For higher comfort take a taxi.
Admission
Adults pay 3 Euros, while students, senior citizens and groups of over 10 people have it for half of the price. Owners of PRESS, SMD, ICOM can enter for free and owners of a European Youth Card have a 50% discount. A guided tour is an option as well.
